About the fish

The Arapaima gigas

The Arapaima gigas, also called pirarucu or paiche, is a freshwater fish native to the Amazon in Brazil. It is one of the largest freshwater fish in the world and can grow over 3 meters long and weigh 200 kilograms. Locally, this fish is considered a delicacy and this was the reason for GRRRO to bring this species to Europe, because now everyone here can also enjoy the delicious and healthy filet of this fish.

A Unique Fish

Air-breather

The Arapaima is a unique fish. During evolution, the species developed a second ability to breathe. Whereas other fish breathe only through their gills, the Arapaima has a modified swim bladder function that functions as a kind of lung. This allows this species to extract oxygen from the air as well. As a result, you can regularly see the fish with its mouth above the water to breathe.
In nature, this fish lives in water with little current, such as lakes and tributary rivers, with a temperature between 24 and 37°C.
It is an omnivore, meaning it is will eat many different things. The diet of the Arapaima consists mainly of meat, fish, insects, as well as fruit.

Aquaculture

A Good Species

Despite its size, it is a quiet fish that can be kept very well in aquaculture systems. This ensures that there is little stress and therefore the fish tastes even better! In addition, it is a very strong fish that is not susceptible to diseases. Because of this, we at GRRRO work completely without antibiotics.
